Leadership is fundamentally about inspiring and motivating others to work toward a shared vision. Leaders foster innovation, empowerment, and strategic progress by setting direction, promoting teamwork, and supporting the growth of their team members (Northouse, 2022). In contrast, management revolves around organizing, coordinating, and overseeing daily tasks to maintain operational efficiency, adherence to protocols, and smooth workflow (Marquis & Huston, 2021).
Within the healthcare setting, leaders focus on vision and motivation aimed at enhancing the quality of patient care. Managers, however, prioritize maintaining structure, ensuring patient safety, and facilitating clear communication among patients, families, and healthcare professionals. Both leadership and management are complementary; together, they ensure high-quality care delivery and optimal team functioning.

From a management perspective, I excel at precepting and mentoring new nurses, conducting patient chart audits with constructive feedback, and fulfilling charge nurse responsibilities including staffing and scheduling. These management abilities help sustain team development and uphold organizational standards.

How do you apply each of these leadership and management skills in your practice?
In my role as a charge nurse, delegation is critical, especially during demanding shifts. For example, I evaluate patient care needs and allocate tasks accordingly, such as assigning medication administration to a nurse mentoring a new graduate who had no patient assignments. For conflict resolution, I handle disputes calmly by facilitating communication—for instance, mediating between a nurse and a verbally confrontational patient by developing a mutually acceptable care plan.
Effective communication is integral to providing seamless care. I often clarify physicians’ treatment plans to patients and their families, which helps reduce anxiety. An example includes contacting a patient’s anxious spouse to explain treatment details, thereby alleviating the patient’s distress.
From a management standpoint, I guide new nurses by demonstrating best practices and emphasizing patient safety protocols. I also perform chart audits to ensure accurate documentation and provide respectful, constructive feedback. Additionally, as charge nurse, I manage staffing challenges by reallocating personnel to maintain safe patient ratios during shortages.
