We are officially halfway through this session! I hope the RUA is going well for everyone, as it is due this week. In this discussion, we are focusing on Chamberlain Care and its emphasis on person-centered communication. While exploring this topic, I came across an interesting article from a Chamberlain blog that discusses the importance of this approach in nursing. One line that particularly resonated with me was, “The fundamental core of nursing is to work with the patient, not for the patient” (Bouchard, 2014). This statement highlights the importance of actively involving patients in their own care, making it a collaborative process rather than a one-sided effort.
Person-centered communication ensures that care is tailored to the individual, rather than just following standard protocols. By personalizing treatment, nurses can demonstrate to the patient that their needs and identity are valued. This approach emphasizes looking at the patient’s life as a whole, identifying areas where resources or education may be lacking. The article offers four key tips to enhance patient-centered care and communication: continue learning, maintain balance, understand assessment tools, and avoid discouragement. These guidelines help nurses work effectively with their patients, ensuring the best care possible.
An example that comes to mind is from my experience with Chamberlain’s contact tracing training. During this process, I encountered people who were understandably upset or fearful about potential exposure to COVID-19. As nurses, it is essential to acknowledge and respond to these valid emotions. By using person-centered communication, we can empathize with the patient and ask appropriate questions to ensure they receive the information and resources necessary to address their concerns.
