What is Hospital Compare?

Hospital Compare is a resource that provides insights into the quality of care at more than 4,000 Medicare-certified hospitals across the United States, including over 130 Veterans Administration (VA) medical centers. This platform allows users to locate hospitals and assess the quality of care provided by each facility (Medicare.gov).

In this analysis, we will compare Lincoln Hospital and Jacobi Medical Center, both situated in the Bronx, NY, yet positioned in distinct neighborhoods.

Is there a major difference in care?

Is there a difference in patient satisfaction levels regarding the quality of care between the two hospitals?

Lincoln Hospital Medical and Mental Health Center

Patient Surveys

Lincoln Hospital received an overall rating of one star, but 51% of surveyed patients rated it 9 out of 10. The hospital’s scores for physician communication were comparable to the national average, while communication with nursing staff was lower than both New York and national averages. Only 43% of patients reported understanding their care upon discharge; however, 76% stated they received discharge instructions that outlined their hospital experience.

Effective Care Data for Two Conditions

Sepsis, a severe response to infection that can damage organs and be life-threatening if untreated, was effectively managed in 31% of the 507 patients according to Medicare.gov.

Data on Readmissions, Complications, and Deaths

Unplanned readmissions for conditions such as COPD, heart failure, and pneumonia were on par with the national average. However, the readmission rate post-discharge exceeded the national average of 15.3%. Complication and death rates were either too small to assess or comparable to national figures.

A colonoscopy is one diagnostic procedure used to detect precancerous polyps or colorectal cancer. Best practices indicate that 97% of patients received recommended follow-up treatments, with 100% of those with a history of polyps undergoing follow-up colonoscopies.

Jacobi Medical Center

Patient Surveys

Jacobi Medical Center earned a rating of 2 out of 5 stars, with 58% of patients rating the hospital 9 out of 10. The hospital’s communication score for physicians was 78%, matching the New York average. Nursing communication was rated slightly higher at 69%, compared to Lincoln’s 65%. Although 79% of patients received discharge instructions, only 43% felt they understood their care upon discharge, which was consistent with Lincoln’s findings.

Effective Care Data for Two Conditions

Approximately 35% of patients at Jacobi received appropriate sepsis care, only 4% higher than Lincoln but still below both the New York and national averages. Furthermore, only 67% of patients undergoing colonoscopies received the recommended care, significantly lower than Lincoln’s 97% rate. Among the 67% who did receive recommended treatments, 100% adhered to follow-up protocols.

Data on Readmissions, Complications, and Deaths

The readmission rates at Jacobi were equivalent to those of Lincoln, remaining consistent with national averages. This indicates that Jacobi may have a lower readmission rate than Lincoln. Similar to Lincoln, cases for complications and death were either too small for calculation or comparable to national statistics.

Recommendations for Improving Data for One Selected Facility

Based on my experience working at Lincoln Hospital, I recommend several improvements:

  1. Enhance physician-patient communication by explaining care plans in understandable terms.
  2. Improve nurse-to-patient ratios to allow for more individualized attention.
  3. Increase staffing levels to ensure timely patient evaluations.
  4. Provide updates to patients in the ER or outpatient settings regarding estimated wait times to reduce feelings of neglect.

Summary of Insights Gained from the Experience

Utilizing the Hospital Compare website provided a valuable resource for evaluating hospitals. I discovered that some hospitals I presumed to have high ratings actually had lower patient satisfaction scores. As a nurse, it is crucial for me to ensure that my patients receive the best possible care. The low ratings regarding nurse-patient communication inspire me to strive for better explanations and transparency about their care. I aim to bridge the communication gap to enhance patient understanding prior to discharge.

After analyzing the data from both hospitals, I was surprised to find no significant differences in quality of care. I initially believed that Jacobi would outperform Lincoln in terms of patient satisfaction; however, the results were quite similar, indicating that patients do not report higher satisfaction at Jacobi compared to Lincoln Hospital.
